I was brought up in Ashingdon, Essex where my father was the village butcher. I attended Ashingdon County Primary School and then Southend High School for Girls (1960-67). Leisure time was spent at the Up River Yacht Club in Hullbridge. Does anyone remember me? - I'd be pleased to hear from you! After school I studied biological sciences at Westfield College, London (1967-72) and did a couple of years research before starting teaching at North London Collegiate School (1972-78). After marriage and the birth of three sons I returned to teaching part-time before we moved to Glossop and I took up my post at Hulme Grammar School for Girls in 1988.
